3 Key Tips for Starting a Blog in 2024

Each year I give myself a challenge to come up with a word that encapsulates the year, at the very beginning.

Discipline. Community. Risks. All words of years past.

But, I’ve been ruminating on my 2024 word for months, and, from my iPhone notes to the pages of my beloved Moleskine journal, there was one that kept making an appearance: Action.

Merriam herself has my favorite definition of the word which is, “the accomplishment of a thing usually over a period of time, in stages, or with the possibility of repetition.”

That’s what blogging was is to me.

So, we’re starting big. Watch my latest video below to see my commitment to you, this platform, and myself.

A commitment to transform this little corner of the internet into a hub of beauty, wellness, fitness, and self-improvement content that brings us back to ourselves while simultaneously introducing us to a version not yet met.

Check back in each week as I explore a range of topics from how to properly remove press on nails to the ideal workout split for weight loss.

In the video, I promised to explore these topics through an educational lens, so I would be remiss to keep these best-kept content secrets to myself. If you’re like me and are interested in launching a blog in 2024, regardless of your niche, here are my tried-and-true hacks for getting off to a great start. These methods have helped me scale digital publications and blogs for consumer brands and tech companies alike.

3 Key Tips for Starting a Blog in 2024

  1. Nail your Niche:
Now, it’s quite the cliche to start off with niche selection, or narrowing down your subject matter, but this makes every list for good reason. Choosing a specific niche that aligns with your interests, expertise, and audience demand is essential for setting your blog up for long-term success. If you’re having trouble getting started, I love pondering the following question: If you had to give a 30-minute Ted Talk on any given topic, without preparation, what would it be? This line of unfiltered thinking will get your wheels turning as you try to narrow down what you can naturally riff about. You want to select a topic that you can write about ad nauseam to attract a more dedicated audience.
  2. Reader-Centric Ideation
Now that you’ve got your niche, it’s time to become hyper-obsessed with your audience. If you’re launching a food blog, what kind of cuisine or diet are your readers following? Are you the go-to spot for keto meals? Can readers turn to you for under 30-minute meals, like Rachel Ray? Find out the topics, pain points, concerns, and problems that are of the utmost importance to your reader, then create content targeting them. Getting into the posture of service and guidance as quickly as possible following your launch will prevent you from inundating your reader with useless content.
  3. Study SEO
SEO tends to be one of those big, scary acronyms that people data-adverse try to avoid like the plague, but it’s going to become your very best friend as you venture along your blogging journey. Think of SEO as your super insightful, all-knowing friend that brings you the best product, book, and restaurant recommendation because she’s sorted through all the BS to uncover what’s hot. That’s what SEO does for web users. It scours the internet to help rank the most important blogs and websites, based on keywords, titles, backlinks, etc. The goal is as follows: optimize your content in a way that improves visibility on search engines and helps drive organic traffic to your site. Happy reader, happy writer.
